AMSA Presidential Internship on Physician Leadership & Education

As the senior elected official of AMSA, the National President leads the all of the strategic initiatives of AMSA and ensures that AMSA develops information and action based on the policy set forth in the House of Delegates. This year, the National President will be working with interns to develop AMSA's materials on the following issues: health disparities and social justice, physician leadership, alumni mentorship and for our 2008 convention in New Orleans. The president is also developing a new project to teach skills for students and residents to be better teachers. In addition, any student who would like to suggest additional topics is welcome to do so.

AMSA now needs assistance from enthusiastic students (pre-meds or medical students) willing to assist with background research, position paper development, and creation of student activism opportunities on these issues. Interns will gain valuable health policy and organizing experience by researching and preparing written documents, interacting with other student and medical organizations, and discussing issues with students and health professionals. No previous experience is necessary, but applicants should have strong writing skills, ability to work independently, willingness to work hard, and most important, a passion for the issue and for AMSA! In order to apply, please note the following application guidelines:

Internships are 4-8 weeks in length and held at the AMSA National Office in Reston, a half-hour outside of Washington DC in Northern Virginia. They are available year-round; dates are flexible. Electives are full-time. Academic credit can be arranged with your home institution. Although AMSA cannot provide a stipend, free housing is available.

Complete applications will consist of a current resumé, a writing sample of two to five pages and a letter of intent (no more than 500 words), which will include:

  1. Name, address, phone number, email address (if available),
  2. Preferred dates for the internship,
  3. Current university or medical school, year of study, major & minor,
  4. Description of your interest in the topic, and
  5. Future career plans and how this internship will further your goals.

***Please note - only accepting applications for September and later***

Applications should be submitted by email to pres@amsa.org. Please mail a hard copy to the address below if you do not have access to email.
