AMSA Premed Background

For nearly 60 years the American Medical Student Association has been dedicated to serving the needs of physicians-in-training. As a premedical student, you are indeed a physician-in-training, and AMSA is here to help you in any way it can. From an annual medical school fair for premeds to tips on the MCAT and application process, from networking with medical students to linking up premedical students from across the country, AMSA is committed both to helping you get into medical school and to making you a better physician.

The highlight for AMSA premedical students each year is most certainly the national convention each spring, an event in which premedical students can learn techniques for interviewing, share hints for the application process, and attend a Medical School Fair to learn more about specific medical schools. However, there is a wealth of activity at our local chapters as well, including community service events such as teaching others about HIV/AIDS, fundraisers such as a Fun Run, meetings such as hearing a speaker on managed care, and social events such as pizza parties with local medical students.

Since its inception in 1986, the Premedical membership in AMSA has grown considerably. Currently, there are 230 nationally chartered chapters and over 8,000 premedical members. With an ever-increasing demand for AMSA Premedical chapters and benefits for our members, large growth is expected to continue.

AMSA's mission for its premedical students is to provide information, support, and leadership development for future physicians in training. As activists, we seek to foster our philosophy of diversity and community service in the premedical student, while providing benefits and services which aid future physicians in training as they prepare for a career in medicine.
