Gender and Sexuality Committee

The mission of the Committee on Gender and Sexuality is to establish AMSA as a national leader on issues affecting the health of women and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community and support initiatives to improve policy at the institutional, local, state, and federal levels. We identify individual schools, communities and social partners to build a strong national network of educators, advocates and visionary leaders in matters of gender and sexuality. The issues faced by both women and the LGBT community stem from common roots in sexism and heterosexism and we believe that these issues are best faced by a unified community. We will advocate for patients through curricular improvement, increased physician education, and increased research health-related resources. We will support physicians-in-training by providing a safe and supportive environment, leadership development opportunities, and advocating for their rights. Women's Health

USC Keck
Southern California AMSA showed its support of LGBTQ youth in a health fair hosted by the Rainbow Pride Youth Alliance on May 3, 2008, in San Bernardino. Representing AMSA's Committee on Gender & Sexuality and USC Keck SOM's MedGLO were: Nicholas Arger, Leslie Hernandez, Patrick Hou, Michael Lee and Yushiu Lin. In addition to performing basic health screenings, offering LGBT health information, the medical and premedical students also shared advice regarding a career in medicine. Patrick Hou created and led a panel on LGBT healthcare issues, right before fair participants were treated to a fabulous drag show (lion king music & regalia included!).
